We paid a lot for this painting in 2004 and it has been a moving presence in our home. The artist died too young or, we believe, his work would be bringing six figures today, as it did briefly when a group of his paintings appeared on the market a decade ago and were snatched up by a wealthy Russian collector. We are pricing it now at our cost.

Youla (Jules) Chapoval

Russian / French
23" x 36"
1948 in period frame
Youla Chapoval was born in Kiev, but his family moved to Paris when he was only 5. He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille and Toulouse. Although initially a figurative painter, Youla Chapoval quickly became one of the leading lights of French abstraction, with a guarenteed future. He died at the age of 32. His work is rare, but still has a strong record at auction
There was a retrospective of the art of Youla Chapoval at the Musée d’art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1964, and another at the Musée d’art Moderne, Villeneuve d’Ascq, in 1991.

This painting was purchased by the parents of the previous owner directly from the artist in his studio. We have had it professionally cleaned and achivally varnished.
