     Born in San Francisco to a well-known author and editor, John Cosgrave took up art and was drawn to publishing world. He became a noted magazine illustrator, primarily of marine subjects, and was also a painter, engraver, writer, and graphic artist. He did covers and other illustrations for Life, Fortune, and Yachting magazines, and others.
He illustrated many books like Salt Rivers of the Masachusetts Shore, Frost’s anthology Road Not Taken, Cleared for Action: Four Tales of the Sea, Long Ships Passing, The Log of Christmas Columbus’ First Voyage to America and contributed paperback bookcovers like Ellery Queen’s Double Double. School Library Journal said of the classic Newberry Award Winner, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, “Illustrations, rich in detail … add authenticity and value.” The Encyclopaedia Britannica carries a reproduction of his painting Yacht America.

He also illustrated and authored books like American Sailing Crafts, and co-authored others, like Donald McKay: Designer of Clipper Ships. His work and career is discussed in Jackets Wanted, Illustrators of Children’s Books 1744-1945, Artist in California 1786-1940, the exhibition catalog Pictorial Covers 1920-1950, The Salons of America, and many standard references.
