Plum Branch against full moon

Plum Branch against full moon

Kano Sanraku

Japan 1559-1635
ink & watercolor on paper
A powerful ink painting with the underlying boldness of contemporary art. Note how the ancient tree nodule that has found new life in a single branch looks like a lobster.

Earliest style of this artist signature, Metropolitan Museum curator/restorer Misuihiro Abe confirmed paper as 17th centuryI. It was  exhibited in Arts & Traditions of Japan 4/94 Seiderman Gallery. We guarantee period and style, but it may be school of Kano Sanraku.
