Gambone created these iconic figures early in the 1950s shortly after he set up his own studio in Florence. We've sold several of them over the years, some smaller, some slightly larger, each unique. Most are in this color palette, though we had one which was red, white and blue. We've appended a picture from Gambone - La leggenda della ceramica. For more work by Guido and by his son Bruno, click on their names.

The most "famous" one was reportedly given to Hemmingway by Picasso, and when it was stolen over a decade ago from his Key West home / museum, the heirs claimed it was by Picasso, and hence worth 10 times what we need for it. Actually, I saw it on top of a wardrobe in a bare upstairs bedroom and none of the docents could tell me anything about it. Now a "replica' sits in a special case in Key West. That Gambone influenced Picasso and vice versa is clear, but the lost lion was Guido's.
