These wonderful multimedia paintings challenge assumptions and provide a sense of mystery. The first collage inclludes a slate panel with chalk like imaginary calligraphy in the center of an altered musical score. Pieces of tortoise shell flank the central image and a large rusty nail protrudes bent from the top. Each is clearly signed minutely on the front and clearly and boldly on the back as shown in the upper corner of the photgraph. They are strong confident paintings with wonderful mysterious imaginary calligraphy.

We have been unable to locate biographical material on this probably Japanese-American artist who had a solo exhibition at Arras Gallery, 57th St. New York, NY. The reading of his calligraphic signature (shown in the upper corner) can be read a couple of ways, and all readings generate many unrelated connections. The original Arras Gallery dissolved with the death of its founder in the mid 1990s.

We have photos of many of his paintings from this solo show and photos of the artist, the gentleman on the left. Standing beside him is the artist Pier Breccia who also had several shows at Arras Gallery, who recalls the artist, but not his English name.
Correspondence indicates Mitzo’s solo was the first show of the 1990 season. Each is clearly signed minutely on the front and clearly and boldly on the back in Japanese script as shown in the upper corner of the photgraph.

They are strong confident paintings with wonderful mysterious imaginary calligraphy, several incorporating collage of sheet music and other materials, including rusted iron, feathers, hooks, and newsprint.
