WHY THIS IS A FAVORITE
f this were an American Shop sign it would be the centerpiece of any collection. I bought this in the 1970s from a Madison Avenue antique dealer, and it was always a conversation piece when it hung in my foyer (you can't say that for most shop signs!). Brooklyn Museum curator Robert Moes and a Chinese dealer were going to consider it if I didn't buy it. The Chinese gentleman kindly mis-translated it as broth for stomach ailments. Later, we got a more candid translation.
