The Genre painting of a young African American girl eating watermelon was exhibited inthe 1950 Salamagundi Club the year before the artist died. It was a gift to a friend made  in the same hospital room and remained in the family. The artist documented rural sharecropping and migrant workers in the South and on Long Island. Ironically, he made his money with stereotypes like this adorable little girl and by painting portraits of society dames like the portrait of Helen Heath Burden, a grande dame of the North Fork,  It has the exhibition label and is in a Julius Lowy frame.
