Japan - early 20th century
30" x 20"
wood watercolor

Itinerent painters are commissioned outside a Shinto Shrine to paint a “Thank you” to the gods for good luck. Following a donation, they are hung under the eaves of the temple. Usually small (6-8” wide), relatively short-lived, few survive more than a few seasons. They are almost always house shaped. One this large is very unusual. May commemorate a battle in the Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905).
