Afro-American Woman & Child - Madonna

WHY THIS IS A FAVORITE
It takes a moment to realize the meaning of this painting which is actually not titled. Note the faint halo around the child.

Afro-American Woman & Child - Madonna

Robert Reid

USA
24" x 48"
ca 1950

The mother and boy appear to have been based on ”She is a Tree of Life to them:”(1950), a photograph by Consuelo Kanaga (1894-1978) that was reproduced in The Family of Man (1855)

It is from the estate of a wealthy Afro-American woman who was active in the Harlem Renaissance. We are not sure that it is an example of an early work by the well known Afro-American abstract expressionist Robert Reid (1924-2002) is the painter of this Madonna and a ceramic sculpture we have by the same artist, which was signed Robt Reid. We sold it without that attribution, but the buyer returned it because he couldn't determine whether it was. Sigh.

It was exhibited at the Massillon Museum in Ohio March-May 2014.
