W. Lester Stevens

1888-1969

22x 29 - Oil on canvas

Stevens was born in Rockport, Massachusetts, staying in the area for many years, before moving to Conway, Massachusetts.  He studied with Parker Perkins in Rockport, before attending the Boston Museum School where he studied with Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson, Philip Hale and William Paxton.

He was widely exhibited at such venues as the NAD (1906), PAFA Annuals (1912-37), Corcoran Biennials (1914-28), CAFA (1924), AWCS (1928) and the SpringfieldMuseum of Fine Art.

He taught at Boston University and Princeton at different intervals in his life.  This work depicts the homes of Rockport under cloudy skies.  The sense that this is a quiet sleepy town is conveyed in the way that Stevens depicts the homes as modest but well kept.
