Cibachromes: Architectural Suite # 5 & #8

Barbara Kasten

Born 1936

Two stunning dramatic wall sized photographs (67 & 62 x 49), mounted and matted approximately 74-79 x 57 inches when framed. They don't come better than this!  She is an early pioneer in the school of Abstract Photography.

Barbara Kasten holds a MFA. at California College of Arts & Crafts. She was the recipient of a Fulbright Hays Fellowship in 1972, two National Endowment of the Arts (a fellowship and a grant), a Guggehheim Fellowship, several University and corporate development grants.

Early in her career, Kasten fabricated or commissioned the construction of all of the objects in her photographs: painted black rods, half-moon mirrors, elongated pyramids, cones, and spheres, and cut-paper forms, to serve as light modulators. She photographed her constructions from unusual angles, using strobes, gels and sequential exposures to “paint with light” before the print is made. She is an author, an award-winning film maker and currently makes mural-sized “digital paintings.”

She has had 19 solo exhibitions, at several galleries, and at the Memphis Art Museum, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, and the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius, Lithuania. Her work has been included in many shows, including ones at the James Michener Art Museum in Pennsylvania, the Santa Barbara Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in New York, the Tokyo Metro Museum of Photography, the Chicago Cultural Center, the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, AZ, the Polaroid Collection Traveling exhibit, the Alinari National Museum in Florence, Italy, and City College, CUNY, NY. Many of these included illustrated catalogs. She has served as Artist in Residency in Turkey, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, France and in this country at Cornell University and the Capp Street Project in San Francisco.
Priced as a pair, we will consider selling them separately.
