Richard Smith

UK/USA 1931-2016
mixed media / pastel 1969-70

"Richard Smith, a British painter whose idiosyncratic explorations of form and color embraced both Pop Art and Color Field painting, making him one of the most distinctive, indefinable artists of the 1960s and ’70s ... Mr. Smith was widely regarded as one of the most original and accomplished British artists of his generation, with a ravishing sense of color and formal restraint that stood in marked contrast to the more emphatic, polemical American style." NYT 4/18/2016 obituary.

His work predated the POP movement in America. In 1959, he exhibited paintings that combined aspects of Abstract with commercial images. In the permanent collections of Victoria & Albert, the Tate, Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, and a dozen others. Recent retrospective at the Tate and MIT.  Biography and a critical review of his works on the back

From Lewis collection, Richmond, VA, who bought the piece in 1970
