Fransico Goya

5 x 7 etching

The title of this etching by Spanish artist, Fransiso Goya, translated means, "Dawn comes, we go." This work comes a series of eighty prints that Goya completed in 1799. This work is a later edition from this series.

Fransico Goya was court painter to the kings of Spain during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The prints from this series are an expression by the artist of what he sees as the follies and foolishness of the Spanish society of his day. Goya is quoted as saying that these show, "the innumerable foibles and follies to be found in any civilized society, and from the common prejudices and deceitful practices which custom, ignorance, or self-interest have made usual...and which, at the same time, stimulate the artist's imagination."

Goya's work are held in the collections of the most prestigious museums in the world, such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Musee de Louvre in Paris, and the National Gallery of Art in London.
