Loring Coleman N.A.

 American  1918

oil  20" x 30"

Typical of his work, this interior scene shows a winding staircase leading to a lit area below, not seen by the viewer. As the viewer's eye moves down the stairs, the work lightens to reveal walls that are weathered and a staircase that is only partly intact. Some of the railing remains but almost all are missing, challenging the viewer to walk down the stairs with no railing to assist them in their journey toward the light.

This painting in the original Artist Frame was the winner of the 1959 Emily Lowe Prize for Oil Painting from Allied Artist of America. It was exhibited National Academy of Design. He is a multiple winner of the Carnegie Award from the Academy. Coleman won the 2004 Concord AA 1st Prize for watercolors.
