Raoul Michau

An important surrealist, born in Tours, France, Michau continued his art education in Shanghai and studied under the Russian artist Podgoursky.  He stayed in China for six years before traveling the world, finally settling back in France in 1930.  At this time he exhibited at the Salon Des Surindependants, the Salon des independants, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries.  His works are held in the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Renard Suzanne's 1968 book and a traveling exhibition of his work share the title, Raoul Michau. This retrospective toured a number of museums including the Cantini Museum, the Marseille Museum and the Tours Museum between 1975-76.  His work is discussed in Alfred Schmeller's Surrealisme.
